Welcome to the homepage for the HIMT:  Coding Specialist Certificate program at Quinebaug Valley Community College.  The HIMT program is a fully online certificate that prepares the learner for employment in a health information management department as a medical coder or health information management technician.

Through a partnership with the Connecticut Distance Learning Consortium (CTDLC), students can take all require courses online to earn their certificate from QVCC.

Course of Study


HIM 102             Introduction to Health Care Systems - 3 credits

This course introduces the student to the field of health information technology.  Topics to be covered include the health care delivery system, medical record format and content, various filing systems, and types of medical record personnel and credentials.  In addition, the course will cover retention policies and procedures, documentation, confidentiality issues and legal and regulatory aspects of the medical record.

Prerequisite:  MED 125 (may be taken concurrently)

HIM 210 - Coding I - 3 Credits

This course emphasizes data abstracting techniques and the use of classification systems such as International classification of Diseases, 9th Edition, Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) and Physician’s Current Procedural Terminology (CPT-4) or most recent editions.  Students will gain knowledge of and learn how to prepare claims using various formats.  Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs) and various health insurance systems will be discussed.

PREREQUISITES:  MED 125, HIM 102

HIM 201 - Health Information Management Principles - 3 Credits

This course emphasizes sources, definitions, collection and presentation of health data.  Topics will include health care data systems, tumor registry, birth and death certificates, utilization and review, risk management and quality assurance.  Issues concerning management, retrieval, and retention of health records, and compliance and regulations will be discussed along with current trends in health information technology.

PREREQUISITES:  MED 125, HIM 102, CSC 101 (may be taken concurrently)

HIM 211 Advanced Medical Coding - 3 Credits

This course is a continuation of Coding Classification Systems and Nomenclature. Emphasis is placed on diagnostic coding utilizing ICD-9-CM coding system or most recent edition.  Diagnosis Related Groups (DRGs), various health insurance systems, and claim processing will be discussed.

PREREQUISITES:  MED 125, HIM 102, HIM 210  (may be taken concurrently)

HIM 254 HIMT Practicum - 4 Credits

This course provides the student an opportunity to obtain an overview of a health information management department.  The student will concentrate their time developing their data abstraction and coding skills.   One hundred and sixty hours of supervised clinical experience and three hours of classroom seminar will be required.

PREREQUISITES:  HIM 102, HIM 210, HIM 211, HIM 201

MED 125 - Medical Terminology - 3 Credits  

This course will introduce the student to the systems of the body and terminology related to each system.  The anatomy of each system, diseases and disorders will be covered.  Common medical abbreviations of medications, diagnostic testing, diseases and procedures will be incorporated throughout.  Terminology of psychiatric disorders, surgery, administration and classification of medication, oncology/nuclear medicine, and pathology/autopsies will be presented.

BOT 245 - Medical Machine Transcription -  3 Credits  

An advanced course in transcription. Students will practice transcribing medical information from taped dictation. Medical terminology learned in MED 125 will be reinforced. Emphasis is on correct use of terminology, spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting special medical forms.

CSC 101 Computers I: Introduction to Computers - 3 Credits

An introduction to computers and their applications using IBM-compatible microcomputers. Students will get hands-on experience with an operating system and with applications useful to students, including word processing, literature searches, spreadsheets, database management, and telecommunications. Students will learn how to learn about computers so they can continue learning on their own.

ENG 101 Expository Writing - 3 Credits

Students develop competence in writing academic essays that are clear, logical, and fully developed, employing rhetorical modes such as summary, comparison, analysis, and argument. Research and bibliography skills are involved, as well as reading, critical thinking, multiple revision, interaction with other students’ work, and an understanding of writing as a process.
