Assessment of an Instruction ... ITKIOSK Logo to ITKIOSK Home
How should you evaluate an instruction?
Two evaluation processes are formative evaluation and summative evaluation.  Formative evaluation involves evaluating the learning achievement during the instruction. Summative evaluation involves evaluating the learning achivement in the end of the instruction.  For evaluating an instruction with these two processes, you need to consider the following factors:
I. Student learning achievement in terms of knowledge acquisition.
This can be measured by the exam grades after the instruction. Exam is an instrument for you to know what knowledge your students have learned. When you think of an exam, you probably have multiple choice, short answers, or essy questions in mind. In addition to exams, you may think of performance based assessment such as portfolio assessment. For each student, you may set up a portfolio with student's individual assignments, group projects, comments about the course, or other innovative approaches.
II. Student learning achievemnt in terms of affective variables
This aspect of learning achievement is as important as the knowledge acquisition. What do your students feel about the instruction will affect their further learning in the same subject or even different subjects. The affective variables include attitudes, personal goals, interests, confidence, and so on. Affective variables can be measured by a survey questionair or by a short interview.
