QUINEBAUG VALLEY COMMUNITY COLLEGE

TURBULENT ECONOMIC TIMES AFFECTS THE COLLEGE POSITIVELY

The fall 2008 semester at Quinebaug Valley Community College (QVCC) started with a record 1,947 students enrolled at the Danielson campus and Willimantic Center. The number of full time students is 715, which represents a 40% growth since fall 2003.  For the first time, the town of Windham represents the highest enrollment of students with 317.  In turn, the QVCC Willimantic Center has recorded a 25% increase in students since 2003.

Dean of Learning and Student Development, Susan D. Huard Ph.D. stated, “Once again QVCC is experiencing record-breaking growth in all sectors. It is clear that our students are affected by the rise in gas prices because they are making choices that bring them to campus for longer periods on fewer days. The growth at our Willimantic Center and in online and hybrid course offerings underscore students’ desires to economize by staying closer to home. They are wise consumers using the College’s flexibility to their maximum advantage.”

Carlos Luna, a 2008 graduate from Windham High School, decided to get his start at QVCC with future plans to transfer to ECSU or UCONN. Luna stated, “It’s less expensive to start and close to home.” Another Willimantic Center student, Blaine Aponte, Windham, CT, stated, “The college experience is much more appealing at QVCC, particularly because of the smaller class sizes and the convenient location of the Willimantic campus.”
