QVCC INSTRUCTORS HONORED BY COLLEGE COMMUNITY
Two instructors at Quinebaug Valley Community College from
different ends of the spectrum were recognized for their teaching skills by
the college community this spring.
Eric Spencer, an art instructor who teaches Introduction to Studio Art, Drawing I, and Two-Dimensional Design, was the recipient of the Michael Phelan Award. The recipient of this award, named for the late Michael Phelan, is recognized for skill in teaching, interest and concern for students and for inspiring intellectual curiosity and a desire for lifelong learning. Spencer, a resident of Mansfield Center, is a talented graphic artist and illustrator with numerous influential corporate clients. According to his citation, “The talent and ability that keep these customers happy are the same qualities that show him as a trusted authority when teaching…and collaborating with other programs and disciplines at the college. Students recognize his strong knowledge base and have grown to count on his guidance and leadership as they pursue their art and design education.”
The Richard Fontaine Award, named for the former division director, recognizes teaching excellence for instructors teaching within the Center for Community & Professional Learning. Rick Galipeau, this year’s recipient, serves as instructor and site manager for the very successful Basic Motorcycle Rider Training program. “As the primary liaison between college administration, classroom instructors, three training locations, and the Department of Transportation, Rick adeptly handles an extensive list of responsibilities,” said David Baty, associate dean. “It is no exaggeration to state that his hard work and dedication have been instrumental in the revitalization of this program.” Galipeau, a Taftville resident, also serves as director of business development for RISE Engineering.
