Borrower Privileges
The QV library extends borrower privileges to QV students, faculty, staff and local community residents who are high school age or older. Community residents will be asked to provide some proof of address.
Lending Periods
The borrowing period for circulating books is 28 days. Videos circulate for 3 days and may be reserved for academic use. Audiotapes circulate for 28 days. Reference books and periodicals do not circulate. Items may be renewed once for a period of equal length if no other patron has requested the item. Renewals may be made in person, by phone, or online using the patron information area of the online catalog.
Overdues and Bills for Replacement
Patrons with overdue materials receive a notice by mail seven days after the due date. A Bill for Replacement is sent out fourteen days later. Seven days later, a notice of a HOLD to be placed on a students record is sent out. The library does not charge fines on materials returned in good condition. A replacement fee is charged for all damaged, lost, or missing items. Unpaid replacement fees will result in the suspension of borrower privileges and a HOLD will be placed on a students college record. This HOLD prevents a student from registering for classes, receiving transcripts, and graduating.
Loss of Library Privileges
The Library staff reserves the right to amend, suspend, or eliminate library privileges to individuals who habitually and consistently violate library policies. Policy violations affecting library privileges will be documented by QVCC Library staff. Students may appeal the loss of library privileges by following the Board of Trustees of Community Colleges approved student grievance procedure which is outlined in the Student Handbook.
Internet Access
The QV library provides free Internet access to QV students, staff, faculty and community residents. In keeping with the mission of the library, academic use of the Internet is given priority over all other uses. We request that patrons refrain from online gaming, chatting or e-mail that is not directly related to class work. Internet content is unfiltered requiring parents or legal guardians to supervise their children.
Library Web Pages
The Library creates and maintains the Library home page and the Internet Sites by Subject page. The Library reviews all links at least once each semester for currency, replacing invalid or outdated links as required.
All members of the QVCC library community are encouraged to contribute suggestions for the library web pages, including new links. Suggestions regarding these pages can be made directly to library staff or through the “Contact the Library” link on the Internet Sites by Subject page.
The Library staff reviews all submitted links and determines those appropriate for inclusion. Criteria for selection of new links is primarily based on the level of educational or research support for learners and includes authorship, currency, relevance, and frequency of update.
The library strives to comply with all state, federal, and W3C guidelines for accessibility of web pages.
Computer Use
Public-access computers in the library are reserved for academic research. Students needing access to word-processing, spreadsheet, or database software need to work in the computer labs or Learning Center. Users should not tamper with software or settings on library computers. Users should not download and install software from the Internet. The QV library complies with all Connecticut Community College system policies regarding misuse of our computer resources including, but not limited to, prohibitions on using college computers to damage or launch attacks on other computers, denial of service attacks, using college computers for for-profit enterprises, and copyright infringement. Violations of this policy may result in legal action.
Printing
Currently the library does not charge for printing. We do ask, however, that patrons limit their printing to academic research and class assignments. Library staff reserve the right to limit a patrons printing at any time. Please ask a librarian about downloading or e-mailing results rather than printing.
Interlibrary Loans
Students, faculty, staff, and public patrons with a valid library card may use the Interlibrary Loan service provided by the library. This service is provided at no cost to the patron but does cost the library. Therefore, it may be necessary for the library to: 1) limit the number of books that can be requested at one time, 2) request that the patron has researched all the local QV resources for the requested titles, and 3) ensure that all Interlibrary Loan materials be returned in good condition and on time.
Children in the Library
Children under high school age are not to be left unattended in the library. Supervision or restriction of a minor's access to the Internet or other library material is the responsibility of the parent or other legal guardian.
Pornography
The online display of sexually explicit images in public areas of the Library is against Library policy and a violation of the President's policy on Sexual Harassment. QV students who need to view such material for a class assignment can request a private viewing space from Library staff.
