Medical Assisting Associate Degree Program

Thank you for your interest in our Medical Assisting associates degree program. The medical assisting degree program provides students with a general education core and a focused medical assisting curriculum. As multi-skilled practitioners, graduates will be eligible for employment in a variety of medical settings. Medical assisting is one of the fastest growing fields in the US.& QVCCs MA program is accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

The degree program consists of 63 total program credits with a core curriculum of:

HLT* 111 Basic Life Support
BOT* 111 Keyboarding for Information Processing I1
BOT* 280 Medical Transcription and Document Production
MED* 111 Admin Medical Assisting
MED* 125 Medical Terminology
MED* 131 Clinical Medical Assisting
MED* 245 Clinical Laboratory Procedures
MED* 250 Principles of Pharmacology
MED* 280 Medical Assisting Externship
  1. Or proven proficiency in keyboarding and word processing.

The medical assisting externship is the last class that you will take before graduation. You will be placed in a doctor’s office or healthcare facility where you will apply the concepts and skills that you learned in your coursework. 4 credits will be earned for the 160 hour externship experience. The externship will be divided into administrative and clinical duties so that you will be involved in the total environment of the health care facility.

Upon completion of the program, students are eligible to take the Certified Medical Assisting exam and upon passing the exam, use the initials CMA- for certified medical assistant.

Allied Health Science Certificate Program

Thank you for your interest in our Allied Health Certificate. This certificate is appropriate for the student who is interested in a career in allied health.  Students take courses that help them explore opportunities in allied health professions. Credits from this program may be applied toward the associate degree in medical assisting.

Business Office Technology: Medical Office Skills Certificate Program

Thank you for your interest in our medical office skills certificate program.  By taking various courses in business office technology and administrative medical assisting, students will learn tasks such as appointment scheduling, medical billing and transcription.  The medical office skills certificate can lead to various administrative positions in physician’s offices, HMO’s, hospitals and clinics.  

The program consists of the following courses:

Community Health Worker Certificate Program

Thank you for your interest in the community health worker certificate program.  The community health worker is an integral member of the health care team who has the knowledge and skills to provide effective and appropriate support and services to individuals and families within the community.  Community health workers often visit homeless shelters, coup kitchens, clinics and various other health care facilities.

HIMT Coding Specialist Certificate Program

Thanks for your interest in our online HIMT coding specialist certificate program. The HIMT certificate is designed to prepare students to work in hospitals, physician’s offices, insurance settings, or clinics organizing and evaluating medical records.

The program consists of the following courses:

MED* 125 Medical Terminology
BOT* 280 Medical Transcription and Document Production

CSA* 105 Introduction to Software Applications
HIM* 102 Introduction to Health Care Systems
HIM* 201 HIMT principles
HIM* 210 Coding I (consists of CPT and DRG coding)
HIM* 211 Advanced Medical Coding (consists of ICD-9 and HCPCS coding)
HIM* 254 HIMT practicum

For a total of 28 program credits

The practicum consists of 160 hours in a hospital HIM dept. 40 hours are dedicated to the overall operation of the HIM dept, filing, release of record, incomplete records, etc., while the remainder of the hours the student performs in the coding dept, performing in patient, out patient, ER, and surgical coding.

Med Term and Intro to HC Systems are prerequisite courses for the rest of the HIM/BOT courses.

Patient Care Technician

Thank you for your interest in our Patient Care Technician certificate program. The program is designed from the health care community’s need for trained personnel, specifically in the area of patient care. To enter this program, you must have a current CNA- certified nursing assistant certification or an EMT- emergency medical technician with a current certification.

The program consists of the following courses:

With the patient care technician certificate you can be employed by a hospital to care for patients, under the supervision of a nurse or physician.

Phlebotomy Certificate Program

Thank you for your interest in our phlebotomy certificate program. The phlebotomy certificate is designed for students who wish to obtain and validate competency in the process of taking blood specimens from patients. It is one of the most popular programs at the college and a great starting off point for anyone wanting to enter the field of health care.

The program consists of the following courses:

HLT* 141 Techniques in Phlebotomy
HLT* 294 Phlebotomy Practicum
COM* 171 Fundamentals of Human Communication
MED* 125 Medical Terminology
HLT* 103 Investigations in Health Care

for a total of 16 program credits

Students must earn a "B" or better and get instructor approval to take the Phlebotomy Practicum, which is the last course you take. For the practicum, you are placed in a local hospital setting for 120 hours, drawing blood and seeing the overall process of how a lab runs.

All of the above mentioned courses are offered every semester and at various days and times. The Techniques of Phlebotomy course usually runs two evenings a week from 5pm-8pm. Once students have completed their practicum, they are eligible to sit for the national certification exam, which we offer at the college. This national certification allows you to work as a phlebotomist anywhere in the USA.
