NEW VETERINARY ASSISTANT PROGRAM OFFERED AT QVCC
Quinebaug Valley Community College will offer a new program this
winter designed for people interested in working for a veterinarian or
animal hospital.
The 150 hour Veterinary Assistant program will prepare students to assist veterinarians in all aspects of animal care. Veterinary Assistants provide surgical and nursing care to animals in clinics, as well as field settings. They also provide basic care, perform laboratory procedures, and assist in the veterinary clinic with other functions. Veterinary Assistants work in a variety of settings including animal hospitals and clinics, animal shelters, laboratories, zoos, and animal parks.
The program includes three courses – Reception, Terminology, Occupational
Safety and Animal Handling, Diagnostics and Treatment, and Surgical and
Dental Procedures – as well as 30 hours of hands-on training with local
veterinarians and/or veterinary technicians and a comprehensive final exam.
Students can expect to complete the program in about eight months. A high
school diploma or GED is required for admission.
This program is not the same as a veterinary technician program. Veterinary
technicians require a two year degree as well as a national certification
exam.
The first course in the Veterinary Assistant program - Reception,
Terminology, Occupational Safety, and Animal Handling – will run from March
10 to April 28 at the College’s Danielson campus. Tuition for the entire
program (including clinical rotations) is $1,299, but individuals may
register for an individual class at a time at a cost of $389. Textbook and
materials are included.
