Quinebaug Valley Community College assesses student skills in English and mathematics using a computer-based Basic Skills Assessment (BSA). Students, with their advisors, use this information to make decisions about the kinds of courses they are prepared to take.
QVCC requires that the following students take the BSA:
• All new students enrolled in a degree or certificate program.
• Any student transferring to QVCC who has not successfully completed both an English composition
and college level mathematics courses at another college.
• Any QVCC student who has not taken the BSA and has accumulated six or more credits.
• Any student registering for a course with a mathematics or English prerequisite.
The following students are not required to take the BSA:
• Students who have completed an associate, bachelor's or higher college degree.
• Non-degree students seeking to enroll in an occasional course for personal enrichment, not to exceed a total of six credits or have BSA prerequisites.
• Students seeking to enroll only in English as a Second Language courses.
• Students who present evidence of an SAT reading comprehension, writing or verbal score of 450 or higher.
• Students who present evidence of an SAT mathematics score of 550 or higher. Assessment for placement in higher level mathematics may require testing.
The results of the BSA may be used at other Connecticut Community Colleges if the student decides to transfer. Students who have taken the Basic Skills Assessment at any of the Connecticut Community Colleges may use the results at QVCC. For further information contact the director of student services or the Learning Center.
